Who We Are – Hirst Welfare Centre
Hirst Welfare Centre is a welcoming, community-run facility in the heart of Ashington. It is managed by Ashington Joint Welfare Scheme, a registered charity overseen by a board of trustees and rooted in the town’s strong mining heritage.
Initially formed in 1966, the Scheme was established to manage five welfare sites across South East Northumberland. Today, its focus is solely on the management and development of the Hirst Welfare Centre.
Our WHY
We believe in creating opportunities for people in our community to thrive, regardless of background or circumstance. Hirst Welfare Centre exists to build a healthier, more connected, and inclusive Ashington.
Our Charitable Object
“The provision of a social welfare centre for the benefit of the inhabitants (and in particular but not exclusively, such of the said inhabitants and members of the mining community) of the area of benefit without distinction of political, religious or other opinions with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.”
Our Mission
At the Hirst Welfare Centre, our mission is to foster a vibrant and inclusive community by providing accessible and diverse services that promote health, education, and well-being for all.
We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents through a supportive environment that encourages social engagement, lifelong learning, and personal development.
Through collaboration and innovation, we strive to create a hub of community activity where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive.
